Biography

Sharon Brunkhorst is very excited for her fourth year as the 6th Grade math teacher and her second year as the 6th grade science teacher at the Douglaston campus of Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy! She graduated from Adelphi University with a Masterís Degree in Literacy (Grades K-12) in May 2010 and graduated from Providence College in May 2006 with a Bachelorís Degree in Elementary/Special Education. Ms Brunkhorst has had many teaching experiences that have taught her a variety of new strategies and techniques. She worked as an eighth grade and fifth grade inclusion teacher at Lawrence Middle School. Ms Brunkhorst has also worked at Roslyn Middle School as an AIS reading and math teacher. She worked with students in sixth through eighth grades as well as a resource room teacher to eighth graders. Ms Brunkhorst also taught math in two seventh grade self-contained classes and was a co-teacher in a sixth grade science and math classroom. As a teacher, Ms Brunkhorst strives to work as hard as her own teachers did to motivate her students and help them achieve success. She is very upbeat and excited each day she steps into the classroom. Ms Brunkhorstís excitement spreads to her students on a daily basis. She works with her students consistently to make sure that they understand any new material being taught. Students are reminded daily that they mean a lot to Ms Brunkhorst and she goes out of her way to do whatever is possible to help them with anything they may need. Because her students and Ms Brunkhorst work so closely together, a sense of mutual respect is created within the classroom. Ms Brunkhorst wants to ensure that all students learn the exciting sixth grade math and science curriculum while having fun at the same time!  When she's not at school, Ms Brunkhorst enjoys reading, going to the beach during the summer or skiing in the winter, playing with her beagle named Powder, and cheering on the NY Mets and NY Giants.  She's looking forward to a fantastic 2014-2015 school year!
